Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently made a low-profile trip to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago in Florida. What started as a quiet dinner turned into a hot topic online, all because Trump made a "joke."

Reportedly, Trump said to Trudeau, "Why don’t you make Canada the 51st state? You could be the governor!" While Trudeau’s team insists it was just a “good-humoured joke,” Canadian netizens are far from amused, saying, “That’s not a joke—we’re an independent nation!”

The three-hour dinner touched on trade, tariffs, and border issues, with Trump mixing in some “jokes.” Trump warned he would impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods if his concerns about border security and trade deficits were not addressed. Trudeau replied that such tariffs would “kill the economy,” prompting Trump to drop his “51st state” comment.

Someone at the table joked, “Canada would make a very liberal state,” to which Trump replied, “Then it could be two states—one liberal and one conservative!” The atmosphere resembled a family gathering with “uncle-level jokes.”

Dominic LeBlanc, a Canadian government spokesperson, quickly clarified: “This was just a lighthearted social joke with no malice.” He explained that the dinner wasn’t a formal meeting with note-taking bureaucrats but a casual evening. “The President made a joke, and we laughed—it’s as simple as that.”

However, the tariff threat behind the joke is no laughing matter. Economists warn that a 25% tariff would seriously hurt both the Canadian and American economies.

While Trump’s “51st state” remark may sound like a joke, his concerns about border security and trade deficits are real. He specifically mentioned stopping illegal immigration and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and made it clear: “I like tariffs; I hate trade deficits.”

Back in Canada, opposition leader Pierre Poilievre seized the opportunity to criticize Trudeau, calling the border “broken.” Trudeau’s team fired back, saying, “Now is the time for unity, not sabotage!”

While “the 51st state” may sound like a dinner-table joke, it highlights the undercurrents in Canada-U.S. relations. From tariff threats to border disputes, Canada must step up its game to protect its interests—or risk seeing this “joke” escalate further.

🍁P.S.: Maybe Trudeau should prepare some of his own jokes next time to keep up with Trump’s banter? 🍁
